Some families actually choose to hold
Christmas craft competitions. This way, all of the family
members are involved in making creative décor, and
when they take out the Christmas crafts from last year’s
box, these will inevitably bring back fond memories for
those who participated in the competition.
That Christmas crafts are made in private homes says a
lot about local traditions and culture. In English-speaking
countries, the Christmas sock, for example, plays an important
role. It is used to hide gifts, and it is often homemade,
e.g. with beautiful, handmade decorations. In the Scandinavian
countries, the Christmas heart plays a pivotal role. As
early as the 18th century, the great Danish poet, H.C. Andersen,
braided a beautiful heart using paper. Today, a Christmas
without braided Christmas hearts is almost inconceivable
in the Scandinavian countries.
